How do I become a Member?

The Membership fee can be paid by Paypal or Cheque. (Please go to the Search page and follow the instructions).

Members are given access to fully detailed sets of records. For example, any user can check the primary index to see if an individual is listed in the database but only Members can see details of occupation, etc. and similar details of any other people in the household (schedule). The information available is the full transcript of the Enumerator returns together with the notes of the transcriber (these can often be of great help where there is a physical, spelling or enumeration obscurity). In addition to the information on individuals you will also be able to access details of Enumeration Districts and use the Gazetteer facility.

During your Membership period you may make reasonable use of the website/database as often as you wish.

What is the geographical scope of the 1841/1871/1881/1891 Pembrokeshire Census?

For Administrative reasons at the time of the Census a number of 'out of county' places were included in the Pembrokeshire returns. Most notoriously Cardigan the county town of Cardiganshire, was included in Pembrokeshire. Other bordering parts of Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire were also included.

Can I use the Cenquest CD/DVDs on my Mac computer or other operating systems?

Sorry, we have not tested on Mac computers. But if you are an experienced Mac user you will know how to find and open a .pdf file.

The CD/DVDs were designed to be run on a PC equipped with MS Windows XP operating system, Adobe Acrobat reader and a CD/DVD drive. The discs contain sound tracks, splash screens etc. to automatically open under Windows XP. For other operating systems and computers simply manually navigate to and open the single large Adobe file (.pdf format).

I cannot find the person/place I want in the online database- what should I do?

The enumerator would have recorded the information he was given - this may be different from the name given in official documents such as Birth, Marriage or Death certificates.

Broaden your search by making more use of * the wildcard or joker character. If you are searching for Elisabeth Anne try *li* or *be* - this will generate returns covering the frequently used variants of Liz, Lizzy, Lisa or Beth, Bette, Betty, Bess and many others.
Similarly A* will give returns where only the initial letter A has been recorded together with returns for An, Ann, Anna, Anny, Annie and Anne.

The database omits punctuation and is case insensitive in the search process. For example, you can search for O'Conner as oconner, o*conner or *conner.

Use a similar technique for Placenames in the database - if unsure how to spell a place name, use Lland* for example, to bring up places within the database, eg. Llandeloy, Llandewi, Llandudoch and similar. If you know the name of the place but not where it is, try the Gazetteer.

I have found lots of people with the same name - but which one?

Focus on the process of elimination by fully utilising any other information that may assist in discrimination - where they lived, age, occupation, language, birthplace and relations.

Is this website accessible to people with disabilities?

The Cenquest website conforms to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Accessibility Guidelines and has achieved Conformance Level "Triple-A": all Priority 1, 2, and 3 checkpoints are satisfied
